George IV: Art and Spectacle

Reflections on a festive group visit

Last December we enjoyed a visit to “George IV: Art and Spectacle” at the Queen’s Gallery led by Dr Caroline McCaffrey-Howarth. On display were impressive Sèvres porcelain garnitures that included vases of outstanding quality such as the daring Vase angora with mythological scenes by Dodin after Van Loo, and the exquisite pot-pourri Vaisseau en navire, one of ten in the world. Sèvres-mounted furniture by Carlin and the Louis XVI Service added to the sense of opulence and refinement that would have met visitors to Carlon House. A must-see, this exhibition provides the opportunity to inspect such treasures in close proximity. Félix Zorzo
