THE ADVENTURES OF A FLEMISH SCULPTOR AT THE MANUFACTURE NATIONALE DE SÈVRES

Johan Creten

From June 2004 until December 2007, Johan Creten was the first artist-resident in a new programme inviting artists to work and create while living at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres. During his stay, Johan worked on the Odore di Femmina and the Vagues pour Palissy series and paved the way for a new generation of sculptors at the Manufacture by reintroducing stoneware and a new porcelain paste. Some of these sculptures were later shown at the Musée du Louvre during “CONTREPOINT 2” in 2005.

The lecture will explore the technical and artistic challenges of working in the Manufacture de Sèvres. It also aims to place this stay in the larger context of Johan’s artistic practice.

As an introduction you may watch this short experimental film about his show “…en Quarantaine” and the first “Odore di Femmina” sculptures here.
