A celebration of the publication of Maiolica in Italy and Beyond

Edited by J.V.G. Mallet and E.P. Sani, Ashmolean Publications, 2021

This online event marks the publication of the proceedings of the symposium to honour Professor Timothy Wilson. This was held in Oxford in 2017 as a celebration of his long service as Keeper of Western Art at the Ashmolean Museum and of the publication of his monumental catalogue, Italian Maiolica and Europe.

The collated papers present the latest maiolica studies in a wide, international, context, discussing the spread of tin-glazed pottery across Europe. They also include vivid accounts on ceramic collecting through Napoleonic seizures, unscrupulous antique dealers and destruction during the Second World War.

The event will be divided into three parts. First there will be a brief introduction on ‘Maiolica in Italy and Beyond’ by Elisa. This will be followed by two short papers:

Timothy Wilson – ‘A Pisan maiolica plate for Sir William Dethick’. The talk will present a plate recently acquired for the Ashmolean, the only known example of Renaissance Italian maiolica made for an identifiable English recipient.

John Mallet – ‘A survey of some of the developments in maiolica scholarship since 1945, with reminiscences of some scholars I have met in Italy and elsewhere’.

The contributors to the book will be present to celebrate the landmark publication.

After the lectures the audience will be able to buy the book at a special discount.
