In addition to its wonderful collection of Sèvres vases, teawares and other objects, the Wallace Collection is also home to twelve pieces of furniture which have been mounted with Sèvres trays and plaques. Some of these were created in the 1760s and 1770s when the fashion for porcelain-mounted furniture was at its height, others were later ‘enhanced’ with porcelain additions, and a handful were entirely new creations in the nineteenth century. The quality of the Sèvres ranges from the best of the best, with painters such as Edmé-François Bouilliat, Armand l’Aîné, André-Vincent Vieillard and perhaps even Nicolas Dodin represented, to less accomplished hard-paste plaques and later-decorated trays. All make for the most fascinating commentary on the history of Sèvres and also of the English taste for it, which resulted in many of these pieces being created.

Helen Jacobsen and Ros Savill are joining forces on 17th January 2020 for a study visit to the Wallace Collection to take us through the collection and to look closely at these beautiful works. The morning will incorporate no doubt lively discussions on furniture, porcelain and the history of taste, and will end with the opportunity for further debate in the Wallace Collection restaurant.
